Winter can be both stunningly beautiful, and completely unrelenting and severe (as can most families). What interests me is this dichotomy.

Brief Description of Work:

Down Payment on a Dead Horse begins as a formal portrait of the Saskatchewan winter landscape, and becomes an examination of masculinity (shot on Super 8, 16mm and VHS). Here, I am focused upon the inherent innocence that lies within these family images, and I am also drawn to the darker implications of them as well. In contrast, the winter landscapes are meant to be in direct opposition to the lush color, and familiar poses that have become synonymous with old Super 8 "home movies."

This project is an attempt to strip different images down to their basic elements, to examine their photographic possibilities, and their connection to the "Canadian" identity. Winter can be both stunningly beautiful, and completely unrelenting and severe (as can most families). What interests me is this dichotomy. These elements have become so ingrained into our character, and social construct, that most people are almost oblivious to them on a basic level. They see these things as something to overcome, or something to complain about, and not something that is in fact a part of who we are.

"Jason Britski's experimental film is an evocative visual testament to Hemingway's notion that "all things truly wicked start from innocence." Incorporating 8mm film and digital video, Britski expertly deconstructs seemingly unassuming images to reveal the danger hovering at their margins."- Agata Smoluch Del Sorbo, Toronto International Film Festival Programmer
